Why Should I care about Proust?

Proust has written one of the most fascinating and influential novels of all time. Unfortunately, it's so long many people never finish. We'll read it together and celebrate each 500 page milestone.

How will this course help you?

By the end of this course you will have

  • Read one of the longest novels in the world

  • Worked as a group to annotate the entire manuscript

  • Created--as a group--a blog that provides guidance for others who follow in your footsteps.

  • Explored and shared a particular interest or topic with the class

Final Blog

Instead of a final in-class exam, we'll have a final blogging session. We'll review and edit earlier blogs, write final posts, and provide framing material for future readers.

How Can I succeed in this course?

  • Read! Find a way to incorporate reading (or the audiobook version) into your daily schedule

  • Participate! Talk; Annotate; Blog; Edit; Share

  • Take Risks! It's scary to post blogs to a general audience. Rely on your fellow writers/editors to ensure that your posts are post-ready. And remember, you can always edit/delete later.

  • Communicate. This course will likely be different from other courses you've taken. Don't worry--we are in it together. I have an open door policy and am available to talk whenever you have questions or concerns. If you feel more comfortable with email, feel free to communicate with me that way.

  • Have Fun! At the end you will be able to say that you've read a 3500 novel, but don't forget to enjoy the journey.

How Will You and I Evaluate Your Progress

We all bring different strengths to the course. Share those with us through your annotations and blog writing/editing. If you stay on top of the reading and come to class ready and willing to participate, you will do well.
